  Osun State High Court has found the popular hotel owner, Dr Ramon Adedoyin guilty in the murder case of Timothy Adegoke, a former master’s degree student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, whose death occurred between November 5 and 7, 2021, at Hilton Honours Hotel, Ile-Ife. The Osun Chief Judge, Adepele Ojo, while delivering her judgement on the case, held that the circumstantial evidence available to the court, pointed to the killing of Adegoke while being a guest at the hotel owned by Adedoyin. According to her, Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box did not help him, as the circumstantial evidence had shifted the burden of proof on him. Justice Ojo also said Adedoyin’s decision not to enter the witness box meant he agreed to the murder charge pressed against him by the prosecution, dismissing the alibi pleaded on his behalf by his counsel, who said the hotel owner was in Abuja for many days around the time the death of the late Adegoke occurred.   The Supreme Court has given a judicial seal of approval for the inauguration of President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima. The Court on Friday dismissed the suit by the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, seeking their disqualification from the 2023 presidential election. The Apex Court held that the PDP’s suit praying disqualification of Tinubu and Shetima was grossly lacking in merit and dismissed it. Justice Adamu Jauro who delivered the lead judgment slammed a fine of N2 million on PDP for poke nosing into the internal affairs of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the conduct of its primary elections and nomination of its candidates. Justice Jauro agreed with Tinubu’s lawyer, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, that PDP acted as busy body and meddlesome interloper in the ways and manners it dabbled into APC’s affairs unjustly.   A former presidential candidate, Ambrose Owuru, has been asked to pay N40m fine for filing a frivolous suit seeking to stop the inauguration of the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 29. This is according to a three-member panel judgment of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, May 25, 2023. The panel held that the appeal by Owuru and his party, the Hope Democratic Party (HDP) amounted to an abuse of the court process. The Court of Appeal also held that the grievances of Owuru against the 2019 presidential election was not only strange but uncalled for because the grievances had been pursued up to Supreme Court and was dismissed for want of merit.   Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arraigned Saadatu Ramalan-Yaro, a businesswoman, for the second time in Lagos State, two weeks after her first arraignment. The businesswoman was brought before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of money laundering amounting to over N140 billion. She is accused of not fulfilling her responsibilities as the director of Tsami Babi Resources Limited, a designated non-financial business, by not submitting the company’s activities. The EFCC stated that Ramalan-Yaro deposited N100 billion into the company’s account with Zenith Bank without informing the Ministry of Commerce. The act committed by the accused contravenes Sections 5(1) (a) and 16(1) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act of 2011 (as amended), and is punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.   LAGOS, May 22 (Reuters )- Nigeria commissioned Dangote Refinery on Monday amid hopes of transforming the country into a net exporter of petroleum products, but analysts said securing crude supplies could affect it achieving full production this year. The government of outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari sees the refinery as the answer to Nigeria's repeated fuel shortages, the latest of which hit the country in the run up to February's disputed presidential election. Nigeria spent $23.3 billion last year on petroleum product imports and consumes around 33 million litres of petrol a day. Dangote's 650,000 barrels per day refinery plans to produce 53 million litres a day. The plant plans to export the surplus petrol, turning Africa's biggest oil producer into an export hub for petroleum products. S.A Adebese, the police prosecutor, prayed the court to remand the defendant for 21 days pending legal advice from the directorate of public prosecutions (DPP).
