Russia seeks UN backing for Syria truce

Image
UN Security Council Russia is pushing for a UN Security Council vote Saturday to support the ceasefire it helped broker in Syria, where the truce remained largely intact on its second day despite sporadic clashes. Moscow says it wants the United Nations to be involved in peace talks between Damascus and rebels in Kazakhstan in January, although the UN is negotiating its own separate peace efforts. Rebel supporter Turkey and key regime ally Russia, which brokered the truce, say the talks in the Kazakh capital Astana aim to supplement UN-backed peace efforts, rather than replace them. Advertisment  They want to involve regional players like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan. Russia’s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin voiced hope that the council would vote Saturday on the draft resolution — which also endorses the planned talks in Kazakhstan — “and adopt it unanimously”. Diplomats however, said they did not see how a quick UN weekend vote could occur as the...

Image
Wladimir Klitschko Wladimir Klitschko has warned Anthony Joshua that he could knock him out with either hand in their world title fight in April, writes www.eirsport.ie The Ukrainian has 53 stoppage wins in his 68 fights, including five in his last eight, a statistic which he claims proves that, despite being 41 when the Joshua clash takes place at Wembley, he is getting better with age. “I think trainers and fighters have been studying my style and they are aware I can knock people out with both hands,” he said. “I showed it many times. Advertisment  “I do have a lot of weapons. One of them is the jab. It depends how much Anthony is going to give me to use, and which weapon I’m going to choose. “With age I got faster. And my endurance got better, my anticipation. “Until now I’ve seen progress. I always ask my team – you guys better tell me before I slow down, because maybe I won’t feel it. Just tell me if it’s there. So it’s not just my opinion. It’s the o...

Two killed as Igbo traders clash with Fulani in Enugu

Image
Two people were killed yesterday in Enugu, following a bloody clash between Igbo traders and a Fulani at the Gariki market. The deceased persons were simply identified as Ali and Ifeanyi. The Guardian learnt that trouble started when the late Ali brought a cow from new Artisan market to slaughter in Gariki abattoir where Ifeanyi worked as an attendant. Advertisment  The idea to bring the cow to Gariki abattoir was due to the state government’s order to close the Artisan market following a clash that led to the death of a policeman, Gabriel Ugwu. According to a source at the market, the quarrel started when the late Ali paid Ifeanyi N400 as slaughter fee instead of the stipulated N500. The argument over the balance of N100 led to a fight in which the Fulani allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed him to death. It was further learnt that as he tried to escape from the scene, some outraged Igbo traders held him and killed him in retaliation. The angry trade...

Doggy style causes cancer and stroke, South Africa health minister. Aaron motsoaledi.

Image
South Africa’s Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, has said ‘doggy’ style during sex is the major cause of cancer and stroke. He said after three years of arduous research, he found out that the high pumping of blood during sex, when one is standing or kneeling overloads the veins in the legs which ultimately causes stroke. He told The Insider, “On cancer – one of the main causes of cancer is stress, fatigue and tiredness. “The most energy consuming and stressful sexual position for men is doggy; hence the connection is more than clear. “Look, I am only giving you guys a snippet, but we will be posting the results of the full research on the Ministry website.” He added that he is in talks with Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba to craft a legislation that will seek to outlaw this style. According to him, occasional doggy style like only on Christmas day and Valentine is harmless but be sure that each night is suicidal. “This is the reason why South African marrie...

Ebola vaccine may be ‘up to 100% effective’

Image
A prototype vaccine for Ebola may be "up to 100 percent effective" in protecting against the deadly virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday. If all goes well, the vaccine could become available in 2018 under a fast-track approval process, it said. In a major clinical trial, nearly 6,000 people in Guinea were given the test vaccine last year, at the tail end of a lethal epidemic of Ebola. Advertisment  Not one of the 6,000 contracted the disease. But in a control group of volunteers that did not receive the vaccine, 23 Ebola cases occurred, researchers reported in The Lancet medical journal. "If we compare zero to 23, this strongly suggests that the vaccine is very effective, that it could be up to 100 percent effective," Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO's assistant director-general and lead author of the study, told AFP. Her team of three dozen researchers calculated a 90-percent likelihood during a full-fledged epidemic that the va...

How to resolve the Biafra question

Image
AFP It is no longer news that a secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) led by Nnamdi Kanu who is currently being detained by the Federal Government is seeking the separation of the South East states from Nigeria. The group wants the states to form a new country to be known as Biafra, the name by which the defunct Eastern Region was once known in 1967-1970. IPOB cites institutionalised marginalisation by the Nigerian state and state-sponsored killing of Igbo as reasons for its actions. Successive Nigerian governments have responded with arrests, detention and outright killing of the group members. Some time ago, the Amnesty International released a damning video detailing cases where the Nigerian military under President Muhammadu Buhari killed not less than 150 members of the group inside a church and other locations in Onitsha, Anambra State on May 29/30 where the group had gathered to remember their heroes who died in the Biafra war four decades ago. Image
Five people were killed and dozens injured following an explosion and fire at a gas station in Ghana’s capital Accra, the police and fire service said Friday. “The situation is very serious,” regional police commander Yoosa Bonga told AFP of Thursday night’s incident. “We can’t immediately say what caused the fire but we took several people to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment but unfortunately five people are dead.”ah Advertisment  A spokesman for the Ghana Fire Service, Billy Anaglatey, said “four bodies were retrieved from the streets and one on the premises of the gas station”. He said some of the victims were passers-by, adding that the fire also damaged a nearby school building. A resident, Daniel Amissah, who had just left the gas station before the explosion, said a leakage on the main gas tank was suspected as the cause. At least 150 people were killed in June last year when a petrol station in Accra caught fire, with heavy flooding contributi...

Fall of Aleppo shines harsh light on UN

Image
A picture shows ruins covered in snow in the town of Maaret al-Numan, in Syria’s northern province of Idlib, on December 21, 2016. Rebels and civilians who have sought refuge in the opposition-held province of Idlib, most recently from second city Aleppo, say they are suffering from skyrocketing prices and overpopulation. At least 25,000 people, including rebel fighters, have left east Aleppo since last week under an evacuation deal that will see the city come under full government control. / AFP PHOTO / Mohamed al-Bakour The warning from the UN envoy could not have been starker: Pounded by a near-daily barrage of air strikes, Aleppo would be totally destroyed by Christmas unless the United Nations stopped the carnage. During the weeks that followed Staffan de Mistura’s distress call in early October, there was a global outcry as Syrian forces, backed by Russia, tightened their grip on the city, but little action at the United Nations. Two Russian vetos at the Security Counc...

‘Paracetamol making women deaf’

Image
Paracetamol Women who take paracetamol or ibuprofen just twice a week could be damaging their hearing permanently. Taking two painkillers a week for more than six years has been linked with significant hearing loss, with the drugs thought to cut blood supply to the inner ear and expose it to noise damage. As many as one in 20 women suffering partial deafness could blame their painkiller use, a study has found. Advertisment  The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology, and first reported by DailyMailUK stated: “If this is a causal relation, it suggests that a substantial proportion of hearing loss attributable to use of analgesics (painkillers) is potentially preventable.” The findings back up similar research in men, suggesting middle-aged women, who commonly take paracetamol and ibuprofen for headaches and back pain, should consider cutting down. Senior author Dr. Gary Curhan, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the United States (U.S.), said: “...
